Mary is a graduate from Southampton University and a postgraduate in Performance and Composition from Surrey University, having obtained various scholarships and achievement awards. Mary began musical directing shows in Surrey and Berkshire, primarily for The Nomad Theatre Company based in the Guildford area. Between the years 1996 - 2000 Mary musical directed many shows for the NTC including 'Company' (S. Sondheim); Billy The Musical (J Barry/D Black); and The Boyfriend (S. Wilson). Additionally Mary musical directed their various annual pantomimes. As a composer, Mary was commissioned by this company to write music for the plays 'Much Ado About Nothing' (W Shakespeare) and Toad of Toad Hall (A.A. Milne)
During this time Mary also ran her own production company called Chameleon Productions, within which she produced and musically directed 'Cabaret' (Kander/Ebb); 'Sweet Charity' (Coleman/Fields); and the pantomime 'Mother Goose'. Mary has written a new musical 'Hot, Mean & Green' based upon the children's story 'The Wind In The Willows'by Kenneth Grahame. In June 1999 Chameleon Productions produced her musical 'Hot, Mean & Green' at the New Victoria Theatre, Woking. This was a highly successful adventure, which proved to be very popular.
Since 1999 Mary has enjoyed working with The Birmingham Stage Company, who specialise in children's theatre. With the BSC Mary has been commissioned to compose music and musical direct for their productions of 'The Witches' (R Dahl); 'Charlotte's Web' (E.B. White) and most recently 'James & the Giant Peach' 9R. Dahl)all of which were Number 1 National Tours. Additionally Mary composed the music for the BSC production of the Jean Anouihl play 'Mademoiselle Colombe', starring Honor Blackman, which was performed at The Bridewell Theatre in London for seven weeks.
Other projects include the recent National Tour 2001 of the musical 'Spend, Spend, Spend' starring Barbara Dickson, for which Mary was Assistant Musical Director. During this time Mary took over as musical director for several weeks, achieving excellent results with the cast and developing a superb professional relationship with Barbara Dickson. In the summer 2001 Mary was delighted to work with Pauline Quirk in the BBC 1 television drama 'Down To Earth'(Series II) playing the piano in the scenes as a featured pianist. Mary was also the hand and body double for the character Kathy.
Having worked as a freelance Musical Director in the Guildford area, Mary worked creatively with the Guildford School Of Acting, on many projects with the staff and students, in particular the Romanian Actors Project, for which Mary was Musical Director. Romanian actors came to the UK to work together with the GSA students to compile and devise a production, incorporating musical theatre, physical theatre and straight acting.
Mary's experience in the music business has encompassed many areas, playing as a soloist; singer or playing musician, to performing within symphony orchestras as pianist or clarinettist and conducting musical theatre bands of all sizes. This has resulted in the accumulation of an extensive repertoire, including jazz, blues, contemporary, classical and pop. Many of her recent composing commissions have required the publishing of a printed score and providing arrangements, with the final result of an audio recording; either completed in a studio environment utilising her own equipment or in a live capacity.
