Desperately Seeking Singers

Our next production is the BROADWAY MUSICAL 'NINE'. The music is stunning. We have started rehearsals and they are going exceptionally well.

As well as having the cast of 16 on stage, we are trying to pull together an off-stage group of ensemble backing singers. Lindsay Macaulay (Musical Director)/Steve Williams (Director) would love to hear from any FEMALE NOMADS who are good singers and who also have the ability to sight-read.

You would only be required to rehearse one night a week and there would be no learning required, as you will be reading from the musical scores.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED PLEASE CONTACT STEVE!

Could you sell a little Advertising?
Why not have a go? You would be helping the theatre's funds. Ever since we moved into the new theatre, the advertising in our programmes his raised quite a nice sum each year. Its a significant contribution to the cost of running the theatre.

Bill Pearson has been seeking this advertising for a long time, and is now getting exhausted with raising this money all on his own.

Please will someone come and help him. He would love to hear from you on 01306 730582 or by email on mailto:bill.pearson@ukonline.co.uk YOU COULD MAKE HIS DAY!

Great Club Night (14th April)
Derek Brooks' slide show about the work of the RSC was a great pleasure, taking us through the plays and the performers comprehensively, the whole thing laced with anecdotes and other background information. Thanks, Derek and Rita. Jenny Freeman performed Mike Bartlett's solo piece Just One Of Those Days with sublety and verve, bringing out all the humour of someone's awful day.

So long! And thanks for all the fun...
It seems we are about one of our longest-standing and most treasured members.

Deb Nurse tells us:
It's likely that my appearance in the musical 'Nine' will be my last performance for the Nomads! Barring accidents andproposals of marriage from rich octogenarians, I plan to be living permanently in Cyprus by October this year. Yes, I'm going to pack the cats into their flight box and subject to myself to 200 days of sunshine a year, petrol at 25p a litre and the hell of having to stop work for three hours at lunchtime. I'll miss the Nomads of course, but I won't be missing the M25, council tax, Tony Blair, the queue at Sainsbury's and endless bulletins about David Beckham's foot etc.

And I'm sure I'll find a drama group on the island somewhere - excuse me whilst I start learning the Greek version of Talking Heads ...

Love
Deb Nurse

Deb has been a Nomad for 22 years. A real trouper when you realise how much she has done for the theatre - acting and singing in many shows; stage management; wardrobe, including making some gorgeous costumes herself, on more than one occasion for a whole cast; Chairman, Secretary and Council member for the Nomads, including time spent on redrafting constitutions, poor thing; helping with social and fundraising events, including providing very upmarket catering; and not forgetting her stint as Company Secretary of Nomad Players Limited at a crucial stage in the development of the new theatre. How many Nomads can claim to have done so much for the theatre? An example to us all!

We'll miss Deb, and we wish her well in her new life, but hope she realises that moving to Cyprus means that she may never again see a Watson's bloomer.

The Gin Game Auditions
The Gin Game
by D L Coburn

24 - 28 September
A Studio production directed by Martin Lawrance

The Boston Globe described this play as a "vibrant study of loneliness, disillusion, old age and death, yet fiercely funny"

This is a prime opportunity for anyone who yearns to play a good character part. Full of extreme emotions for blinding uncontrollable rage to tears of despair. Don't miss this chance to play one of these two wonderful deep and troubled characters who are destitute of hope and happiness but still cling to a thread of humanity (however tenuous).

The characters:

Weller Martin
Physically ailing, destitute and elderly.

Fonsia Dorsey
Prim, self righteous and elderly

Both parts can be played by anyone from 40-ish up.

Auditions are Sunday 2nd June at 2:30 pm and Tuesday 4th June at 8pm, both at the theatre.

Nomads in Festival Success
After an interval of twenty-five years, the Guildford Drama Festival has been revived at The Electric Theatre A few weeks ago, some twelve amateur companies took part, including Splinter Group, founded by Barry McCann. Nine Nomads out of the cast of fourteen participated in his production of Harold Pinter's "Party Time".

We are happy to report that his won the prize for the Best Production. Barry was also awarded prizes for Best Director and Technical Excellence. Congratulations to all.

Our own 'Slinky'
Jenny Freeman works at BBC Southern Counties Radio. She tells us:

I was appointed as broadcast assistant to Ed Douglas and produce his Sunday afternoon show. The radio station's target audience is aged 55+ and as a lot of Ed's Sunday listeners are quite elderly and live on their own, it has a friendly and family feel about it and we always have a lot of fun. One of the items in the show is "Questions and Queries" where listeners can call in about anything they want the answer to. We have had listeners calling in to try and get an answer to a crossword clue and wanting to fine out the uses of saltpetre! The show is a mine of information!

As well as producing the show, Ed calls me in to copresent and I am known to listeners as 'Slinky'. Apart fromthe Sunday afternoon show I am one of the travel presenters and am called upon if one of the regular presenters is unwell or on holiday.

There is a news bulletin every fifteen minutes so it is pretty hectic! Between each bulletin I am checking the cameras at Police Motorway Control in Godstone, which is where the travel is broadcast from, receiving information from patrol drivers, the producer in Guildford and via the fax machine.

I have more recently been asked to assist the Editor of the BBC Southen Counties Radio Magazine with articles and to do talks for various groups and organisations. I can honestly say that there is always a lot of variety working in a radio station. As well as helping at roadshows I was involved with the pantomime and I regularly read the audio version of the magazine. I also worked through the night of the General Election, which was frantic!

One of the most memorable days for me was when Monty Robers, the author of "Man who Listens to Horses" was a guest on our show. The novel and film, "The Horse Whisperer", was based on his book and he was delightful. More recently David Soul from 'Starsky and Huch' fame walked through the news room. Needless to say, no two days are the same!

Nomad Open Day

So We Need
People to offer to:

* Organise and run tours of the building
* Run specimen rehearsals or present short plays
* Run sample acting workshops
