Moulin Rouge! (2001)
The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
Join us in the beautiful Middle Temple Gardens for a lavish film from pop-music-obsessed Baz Luhrmann, who tweaks the conventions of the musical genre by mixing a period romance with anachronistic dialogue and songs. Ewan McGregor stars as Christian, who meets the absinthe- and alcohol-addled Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo) at The Moulin Rouge dance hall in 1890s Montmartre. Star courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman) becomes the star of the play Christian is writing, which parallels the couple’s romance and uses music from a century later, including songs by Nirvana, Madonna, The Beatles, and Queen.
