With a superb book by Dale Wasserman (of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest) music by Mich Lee and lyrics by Joe Darion (think The Impossible Dream) this was the biggest Broadway hit of 1965, winning Tony awards for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Libretto.
The story of how Miguel de Cervantes, in jail, presents a play as his defence in a mock trial run by fellow-prisoners, is enriched with a wealth of splendid music.
