What An Exciting Week!

Every corner of the theatre was alive with activity last week during our sixth Play in a Week - bigger and better than ever!

Between Monday morning and Saturday evening four of the tales by the Brothers Grimm were changed into short plays. These included the well-known Hansel and Gretel and the lesser known The Golden Goose, The Lion, the Lady and the Rose and The Bremen Town Band. These had been adapted mainly by Richard Fentiman with help from Bill Pearson, Brandon McGuire and members of the group. The cast of 37 included actors who came from more organisations than we have hosted in previous years - The Freewheeler Theatre Company, The Grange Centre at Bookham, SeeAbility, the Harbour and Lockwood Centres and Surrey Social Services. They were supported on stage by Richard Fentiman as Musical Director together with four members of his band - Tuxedo Junction.

All the actors had parts in at least two of the plays and between two of the plays Katie Powell ran the tale of The Mouse, the Bird and the Sausage. As the week progressed director Brandon McGuire's support team grew and by the evening of the show some 27 people were involved backstage and of course even more front of house and serving in the bar. The whole place buzzed with activity; Roger Brandon Jones and his helpers building the play's original set: Sylvia McKinley creating a large number of colourful costumes; John Tweedale working all week on the props and with Lisa Arnold on the night; Nick Johnston rigged and operated the lights and Tim Williams was responsible for sound; at the last moment Lauren Fantham created and ran surtitles for the plays above the stage. The show on Saturday night played to an appreciative and near capacity audience, many of them first time visitors to our theatre. Among them the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Keith Taylor and the Mayoress, together with our local Borough Councillor and good friend Jennifer Powell. We are looking forward to next year already -join us then!
