Mhora Samuel, who is the Director of The Theatres Trust, was our guest speaker in April. She began her talk with a tribute to Ken Woodward. Ken had been involved with the Trust since 1989. Almost up until his death in October he had been one of the Trust’s most active volunteer rapporteurs, visiting theatres and reporting back on developments. The tribute which appeared in the winter issue of the Theatres Trust Magazine is too long to report here but it ended with these words “The Theatres Trust would not have survived its early years without the help of people like Ken” and “Ken will be sadly missed. Theatre people everywhere, and the Trust in particular, owe him a great debt of gratitude.” Mhora told us that much of her focus in the last eight months has been creating greater awareness of the Trust’s work across the fields of planning, regenerationand development, theatre architecture, design and heritage. The Theatres Trust champions all theatres, historic, contemporary and new, as important places in our lives.
Our speaker in May will be Roger Broad. His title – ‘Philanthropy is Dead or What’s in it for me?’. What the arts can actually offer to a business sponsor /supporter – and in return what a sponsor can give back to the arts. Rodger has promised to make this subject both interesting and fun – with perhaps some audience participation. Members who are unable to attend the luncheon, please telephone Mary Brooks – 01483-283507 by Sunday, 18th May, 2008.
Due to the fact that our outing to Chichester will be in July this year, we shall be holding a luncheon on Wednesday, 18th June. There has not been time to arrange for a speaker, However, we can look forward to another enjoyable meal from Richard and a little light entertainment provided by members. |
