Mazda 2 launch evening

From time to time we do things that are good for the Nomads (particularly when they bring in money) but don't involve our general membership. They don't show up in the Calendar or the Diary, so few people know about them. One recent example is the production which took place on Wednesday 16 April in the theatre.

For the first time ever the launch of a brand new car was held there - the Mazda 2. This was a joint production by the Nomads and T W White & Sons, who are an associate member of the theatre and have supported the Nomads for many years.

This exciting project won a financial award from Arts & Business for the unique use of the arts involving T W White staff and Nomad theatre members both on stage and backstage. Arts & Business is funded by the Arts Council of England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The show, presented in the form of a television chat show called Today's Women's world (TWW TV), was devised and directed by Peter Forbes, produced by Bill Pearson and Sally Waterfall of T W Whites and performed to a full house of enthusiastic women drivers. It was an evening for women, about women and in support of a women's charity. The show included information and films about the Mazda 2, topical comic sketches about the car, advice on safety from Chief Inspector Sue
Lampard of West Surrey police, songs from Guildford Harmony, fashion and beauty from Debenhams and dancing from the young Nomads. The finale featured the TWW Hunks, six sales guys from T W White, who performed the `Full Monty' - well, the 'Half Monty'. This is what one of the audience, Kate Hawkins had to say ....

"A very enjoyable evening out with the girls, great entertainment and the safety presentations were extremely useful. What a great finale, the boys had guts to get up and do that! Please let me know of any other shows like this one."

Information about the charity Macmillan Cancer Relief was included in the show and a raffle helped to raise over £200 for it.

Arts & Business has given the Nomads and T W Whites lots of encouragement with this project, as it has been a unique enterprise, using our facilities and providing our business partner with an unusual promotional venture. Our collaboration with T W Whites has been developed from six years of varied joint activity, both in the house and the community, based on our youth and children's productions. We are immensely grateful to Sally Waterfall and TW Whites for their belief in us and their support with such a wide range of sponsorship projects. Over the last year they have generously given us £1500 in sponsorship, and we also received an award of £1200 from Arts & Business New Partnerships, mainly towards the Mazda presentation.

Nomad members who took part and helped in various ways included Jenny Freeman, Lauren Fantham, Lisa Arnold, Amy Catten (choreography), Debbie Danaher (food!), Stuart Bangs, Martin Lawrance, Nick Johnston, Tim Williams, Phill Griffith. and dancers Bronwyn Elliott, Kate Raye and Catherine Scott. Nick Cross made a guest appearance.
