Acting for All Workshops 2008

Come and have fun learning about the theatre with us!
The 2008 workshops will again give people of all abilities - the disabled - physical, sensory, learning difficulties - and non-disabled the chance to have fun and learn about the craft of theatre.
Wider ranging workshops than previous years - beginners, to those with some experience, and include acting, stage-craft, singing, movement, writing for the stage, improvisation and character and Masks and Mime, led by Steve Harvey, straight from the hugely successful War Horse at The National Theatre.
There are no fees but everyone attending must be a member of The Nomads. Cost of membership is £30, or £10 for students, unwaged or disabled people. Membership runs until 31st May 2008. Audience participants are very welcome.

Whirligig (Movement)
led by Emma Starr and Danny Osborne
Tue 25th & Wed 26th March
Whirligig will allow actors to explore and experience the art of expression through movement. The course will examine body language and gesture as well as musical movement.
Recording for Radio
led by Richard Fentiman
Tue 25th March
An introduction to the skills of acting on Radio. A number of different scripts will be studied and a professional quality recording created. For this workshop, Richard will be joined by BBC County Sound presenter John Welsman.
Act Up Fun on Stage (Beginners)
led by Richard Fentiman and Emma Starr
Wed 26th – Fri 28th March
For those with little or no experience of theatre. The workshop will cover how a theatre works, basic acting skills, use of voice, props and costume, movement, warm ups and taking direction. There will be a short presentation at the end.
ACT-Advanced Creative Theatre
led by Emma Starr and Danny Osborne
Mon 31st March - Wed 2nd April
ACT will allow more experienced actors to refine and hone their theatrical skills. It is hoped that this augmentation of learning will equip them into becoming professional and confident actors. The participants will be examining status, characterisation and improvisation, as well as breath control, projection and stage craft. The presentation will be devised during the workshop.
Improvisation & Character

Exploring ways of creating characters for the stage, including both use of voices and improvisation".
Mime and Mask
led by Steve Harper
Thurs 27th & Fri 28th March ~ or ~ Sat 29th & Sun 30th March
In this two day workshop we will be looking at how masks work. Using games and improvisation we will be exploring non verbal communication and physicality and then using these to create comic sketches. We will also look at using mask as an impulse to create stories.
Dance
led by Helen Louise Lampard

FUN WITH DANCING: The chance for people with little or no experience to learn about dancing and for those with some experience to learn a little more.
Singing
led by Richard Fentiman
Thurs 3rd & Fri 4th April
An intensive two day workshop which will include projection, choral singing, sight reading, breathing and movement, with a short presentation at the end.
Playwriting
led by Jane Martin
Wed 2nd – Fri 4th April
We will be looking at the difference between writing for the stage and for the screen, developing characters, finding inspiration, developing a story, writing dialogue, and using theatrical devises. Each participant will begin work on their own script.
About the Tutors:
Richard Fentiman
Epsom born Richard trained at Trinity College of Music, London and St Catherine’s Drama School, Guildford. He has produced and directed many musical projects across the country and presently freelances as a voice and presentation skills coach with special emphasis on disabilities.
Steve Harper
Stephens’s recent work includes War Horse and Theatre of Blood at the National Theatre, Laurel and Hardy at the New Vic in Stoke, I’m a Fool to Want You for Told by an Idiot Theatre Company and Adventures of the Stone Heads, Crime of Love and Plastered for Trestle Theatre. Directing credits include The Drips for Facepack Theatre, an Estonian Comedy of Errors and a Hungarian Midsummer Nights Dream. He is a freelance drama teacher specialising in mask, improvisation, clown and commedia dell arte.
Helen Louise Lampard
Helen Louise is an accomplished dancer who has staged several dance shows with dancers from the Lockwood Day Centre at the Electric Theatre under the title Rhythmic Collision and has been choreographer for five Plays in a Week.
Jane Martin
A member of the Nomads for 13 plus years. She has directed several plays, including Olleana, she has also been involved backstage with lighting, sound and other roles. She is the author of 5 plays, 2 children’s novels and numerous other shorter works. In April this year she is directing 2 one act plays written by last years acting for all playwrights.
Danny Osborne
Danny is a member of Scarab Theatre Company and is a tutor for the Nomad Theatre Let Loose programme. He has been involved in drama since 1996 and has been directing workshops since 1999. Danny is particularly interested in how dramatic expression may be communicated through the medium of music and movement.
Emma Starr
Emma trained at St Catherine’s Drama School, Guildford and has established herself as a director of integrated theatre. She was a drama tutor at Seeability for some yeas and jointly with Richard formed Scarab Theatre Company. She presently works for “Together” a mental health charity, and as co-leader for an adult education performing arts course. |
