Flier Summary:
This musical version of Chaucer’s wonderful ’Canterbury Tales’ includes tales that have love and marriage as their theme. On fine day in 1387 Chaucer falls in love with a group of polgrims making their way from London to Canterbury and along the road the pilgrims tell their tales. What results is a bawdy medieval romp that includes rustic comedy, rollicking tunes and wonderful characters.

Description:

The Canterbury Tales was the last great work of Geoffrey Chaucer, for sadly he died in 1400, nearing his sixtieth year. Coincidentally, I was approaching sixty when the Young Nomads first contacted me about Canterbury Tales. Sadly this will ... [more]

Official Review:
the review
The Young Nomads have once again been enjoying themselves over the summer period. This year their hard work, under the direction of Wally Ross Gower, culminated in a production of The Canterbury Tales by Martin Starkic and Neville Coghill.

The Canterbury Tales is a musical based on the work of the same name by Geoffrey Chaucer, written during the 10 cencury This musical adaptation selected five of the 24 tales that Chaucer wrote and weaves them together with interlinking scenes depicting the progress of the pilgrim's journey to Canterbury. The music of the show seemed dated and forgettable so all credit to the musical director, Lindsay McCaulay, and the cast for performing the songs with energy and enthusiasm. There were many solo songs in this show and it was impressive to see confident and credible performances by all the soloists

This play has over 40 parts which meant many of the Young Nomads had to p ay several characters. This provided the opportunity for them to explore different characterisations with voice and body gestures. All of them handled this challenge well, particularly Caroline Sergeant, Nick Williams, Kate Raye, and Heather Ganderton but a special mention must be made of Robin Longes whose inventive performances were a joy to watch. Also during the show there was opportunity for Catherine Scott, Laura Baxter and Kate Raye to show off their dancing talents. And recognition must go to Catherine Scott for choreographing the big chorus numbers so well. Looking behind the scenes we continue to find enthusiasm and hard work from these Young Nomads in all technical aspects of the show as well. The inventive set, lights and sound which created a variety of backdrops for the different tales, were constructed and operated by a thriving team of backstage crew.

Although the show was long and might have been improved by some editing I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and look forward to seeing some more performances by this group of youngsters.
