Noises Off - The Review
Reviewer: Tony Flook
Farce is difficult enough to perform at any time. Michael Frayn's 'Noises Off' raises the bar even higher by planting one farce inside another as an increasingly dysfunctional company of third rate professional actors tour a dire play called 'Nothing On'. 'Noises Off' is funny in the first act, as the team rehearses for the world premiere of 'Nothing On'. It's often hilarious in the second act, when we see the backstage skirmishes between members of the cast, which threaten to cause the cancellation of a performance a month later. These antics are, surely, funnier than anything the paying public will be watching. Fast forward to the end of the run when the wheels totally come off and open warfare breaks out in the group. This is, though, the least cohesive and at times, a sadly predictable piece of theatre. 'Noises Off' is, essentially an ensemble piece. every character is vital to the on-stage as well as to the off-stage story. Almost every one of the cast, under John Norris's tight direction, seemed totally suited to their roles, whether as the cardboard cut-outs they have to play in 'Nothing On' or the often very different 'real life' people we see away from the spotlight. In such a strong cast it would be invidious it would be invidious to pick out individual performances and make tedious reading simply to list all nine players. Cues were razor-sharp throughout. Action was timed to perfection, whether in the deliberately delayed moves or the many precise, high speed incidents. Essential to farce, all the actors played it for real - as if they actually believed in the ludicrous situations and inane words the fictitious author of 'Nothing On' had written for them. On the night I went even the props did almost exactly what they were supposed to - quite an achievement in view of the way some of them were manhandled. The set, credited in the programme to the 'Tuesday Crew', ideally represented the threadbare standards to be expected in the lamentable play within a play. The backstage setting for the second act for the second act would have immediately been recognised by anyone who had ever trodden the boards or worked behind the scenes. For two thirds of the evening we saw an excellent play performed near faultlessly and even the less appealing last act was worth watching in order to appreciate the quality of Nomads' stagecraft.
