Official Review:
Television producer, Pip Burley, has written a new play which he staged at the Nomad Theatre in East Horsley.Burley directed, using workshops and rehearsal times to polish the concept and non-professional cast. He designed the set and the backstage Nomad crew constructed a Spanish villa terrace equal to any West End theatre or television studio. Direction throughout was brilliant. With the long rehearsal period, the actors had a chance to grow into their roles, especially Barry McCann playing Sid, the owner of the villa. This character is a typical ex-pat, enjoying a life of plenty of drink, dictating to his secretary, Louise, and meeting his new neighbours, Henry and Tracy, whose smart clothes gradually degenerated to local standards as the play progressed.Henry was a financial manager, who was sacked when Sir Charles (John Norris) made him the fall guy for a big financial loss by the company-funds which Sir Charles had taken. Henry (Paul Le Blanc Smith) showed well his emotional turmoil from dejection to triumph after Sir Charles threatens to cut off his pension unless he takes the blame. They ensure Sir Charles is compromised by being photographed naked in the pool with the topless Louise (who he believes is a famous star). Anna Langridge in a skin-tight gold bikini was a wonderful contrast from her earlier appearance as the demure secretary Sid’s wife Viv, superbly characterised by Mary Parsons, is finding life with Sid rather boring, and soon has Henry out of his shorts and into her bedroom. Henry’s wife Tracy is at first overawed by the social round she has now entered and Helen Longes brought out well the changes as Viv introduced her to the life on then Costa. The Spanish maid, Maria, was a brilliant piece of acting by Elaine Burns (also the producer), constantly on stage, changing the props and covering for Viv when she is seducing Henry. Sid’s friend Laurie is financing his life in Spain with rather shady deals-a very convincing performance by Andy Deer. By Derrick Graham
