'ALLO 'ALLO - Official Review
The problem with putting a well known TV play onto the stage is that after 10 years the characters are familiar to the audience as played by those actors. Then the stage actors have the task of convincing their audience that they are the characters. The Nomads put together a wonderful cast for their production of ‘Allo ‘Allo, with Richard Peachey playing Rene, the French café owner. He juggles his life between being nice to the German occupying army, supportive to the Resistance, resisting the advances of camp Lt. Gruber (Tony Richardson) and having affairs with his two waitresses. It was a superb performance, not off the stage for 2 hours and very convincing. He was ably supported by Rosa Atkinson as his wife Edith, who, as a classical opera singer in real life, had to serenade the customers off key. Good cabaret act with the two girls on tambourines. Esme Upcott was the café pianist. Pamela Atkinson as Yvette and Anna Langridge as Mimi put the glamour into the show, super costumes and the figures to fill them! Sarah Peachey as Michelle of the Resistance, was not entirely convincing as a British agent working in occupied France, not helped by a blue raincoat and beret instead of a khaki one as worn by nearly everyone else. Leclerc (Alan Wiseman) carried messages and batteries as required Jeff Wightwick made a very convincing Colonel von Strom His representative from the Italian Army, Captain Bertorelli, as portrayed by Emile Touissaint, was excellent, bombastic, full of his doubtful charm and sure every woman would fall for him.Of the other Germans, the SS officer, Herr Flick (Andrew Hamel-Cooke) was outstanding. His would-be lover Helga (Mary Parsons) willingly did a strip-tease for him (right down to famous black and red corsets) while he played the Stripper theme on the violin. Alex Hickman was the British agent, with appalling French, providing the town’s police force and at one point joined by Michelle in matching uniform. Great excitement over the expected arrival of Hitler heralded by a security toughening-up visit of General Schmelling. Impressive performance by Ian Nichols. Not a lot to do for the two escaping airman in the play, but they were there played by Oliver Forsyth and Francis Pindar who also Stage Managed.. Nomads are well known for the opportunities they give to disabled actors to work on the stage and Jamie Benstead and Carlie Salmon provide some of customers in the very realistic café. Costumes were excellent, especially the army ones, production was very slick (Director John Norris) and good use was made of the revolving stage - Derrick Graham.
