by Iain Fraser.

In the tiny, run down village of Inertia, the Widow Twintub is struggling to keep her launderette open. With ever rising rents and taxes she is having problems making ends meet. She sends her adopted son, Aladdin, to plead to the evil Sheikh's better nature to allow her more time to pay!! And now the Story begins!! The Nomad theatre presents a traditional family pantomime complete with Genie, a standard lamp with a mind of its own and, yes, a Flying Carpet (you'd better believe it!).

Written specially for the Nomads, this spectacular production is the perfect antidote to the post Christmas blues. Bursting with sparkling songs, magical dances and a host of fantastic creatures, the entire family will enjoy being part of this timeless battle against good and evil!!!

Official Review:
By Derrick Graham
The first night of Nomads’ Aladdin and the Standard Lamp, still needed the problems sorting out which should have been done earlier. Iain Fraser, is an experienced playwright for both TV and stage, but he should have realised that 3 hours (including the interval) was just too long for a children’s show. There were scenes that could have been cut without spoiling the story, but if Director Stephen Whittock had spent a lot of time creating an effect he may have been reluctant to cut it.. The cast worked very hard, but the plot tended to drag in places and whilst China is usually the setting, this Aladdin lived in Old Bagdad – presumably in an alternative world where the present troubles don’t exist. Widow Twintub runs a laundry, the best Dame part in any panto, and Andrew Hammel- Cooke was excellent in the role with a variety of wigs and costumes. His “son” Aladdin, played by Lisa Arnold, was a slightly more mature actress than usual for Principal Boy and was not helped by a rather utilitarian costume. Excellent acting, but a rather dull script for the lead role. Aladdin falls in love with Princess Tuna, played by Helen Longes and after making his fortune is allowed to marry her by permission of Queen Latoofat (where did they get these names). Barbara Wright -Jackson certainly knew how to punch out a number (she used to have her own band as backing) and had the imperious style for the role. The villain was Sheikh Maboutie (a very fearsome Paul Asher) who was threatening Window Twintub for the unpaid rent on her laundry. To clear the debt, Aladdin gets the Standard Lamp from Maud Tabard’s Bazaar, a nice old lady (Judy Tweedale) who throws in a Magic Carpet for good measure. The lamp was a clever prop mounted on a radio controlled base travelling about the stage and being steered around actors and scenery. Sean Chapman’s Genie was superb, a large man very light on his feet and good voice projection. Amy Stringer as the good fairy was excellent, but strangely wearing black boots with her fairy costume. Widow Twintub had a helper in her laundry called Muttons (Elaine Burns) and the Sheik’s thug was Igor played by Emile Maurice-Toussaint. Good supporting roles. Musical Director was Steven Geraghty with Deborah Spanton and Jonathan Fairey were the other instrumentalists. The excellent desert setting was enhanced by a camel, although not credited, appeared to be Francis Pindar and Robbie Hansard who also played Grevious and Bodily. Harm was played by Joe Wilson and Paraphernalia by Ashley Lovegrove.
