Official Review:
The gallant Gondoliers have set off once more under the command of Peter Thomas and last month plied their trade at East Horsley. Although there was one member of Nomads in the cast, this was a Bookham Light Operatic production on tour (although there was no credit to them in the programme). Special thanks must be made of the clever keyboard playing by David Mortimer who somehow managed to get the sounds of many instruments out of his equipment, including the deep thrum of the double bass. Musical director Selena Hegarty conducted. The character of the Duke needs to be almost that of a man living by his wits, bombastic, selling knighthoods and titles, making charity dinner speeches for 10% of the takings, recommending tailors and laying foundation stones for a fee. Roger Chapman knew his part very well, but somehow didn’t seem to get over this type of character, except in I am a Courtier Grave and Serious. As the Duchess, Joanna Silcox was every inch the Society hostess, presenting ladies whose character needed whitewashing and recommending clumsy dressmakers who pay her for the privilege of her patronage. Marian Allen was their daughter Casilda, an interesting change from the usual casting, altering the dialogue to fit someone not 21, as Gilbert intended. Great voice and acting. Luiz, who turned out to be her husband (to whom she was married at six months) was an excellent characterisation by Arnold Pindar, fine voice and great rolls and crescendos on his drum. Peter Grove’s Don Alhamra, the Inquisitor, was every inch the master of the situation, with almost a permanent sneer at being involved with such lowly people. The two Gondoliers played by Peter Thomas and Joe St. Johanser, were excellent, Peter’s contra-tenor being just the right balance for Joe’s baritone. Their wives, Gianetta and Tessa, were played by Tessa Lawn and Dreen Legg, with a fine performance of Woman’s Heart is one with Woman’s Hand by Gianatta. Another fine voice was that of Myra Gillies as Fiametta, the leader of the Contandine. By Derrick Graham
