Flier Summary:

A musical fantasy. Book by Arthur Kopit. Music and Lyrics by Maury Yeston.

Based on the life, world and mind of the eccentrically imaginative film director Federico Fellini. Nominated for eleven TONY AWARDS, it won five including BEST MUSICAL.

Set in a spa near Venice, film director Guido Contini has a faithful wife and plenty of mistresses. He is under contract to start a new movie, but his personal life is getting in the way. The story is simple, a director has to start a film, can't remember what it's about, but goes ahead anyway. What makes Nine such a special piece of theatre is its mixture of straight-forward narrative with memories and dreams, as if they were all one.

Description:
Nine was first performed on Broadway in 1982 and won five Tony awards. It has been performed twice in London, the first time with Jonathan Pryce and Elaine Paige in 1992 and then in 1996 at the Donmar Warehouse with ... [more]

Official Review:
Nine: the review
Guido Contini's back is to the wall. His last three films have flopped, he is bankrupt of ideas and his latest producer is angry with him. Where is his script? Also Contini loves many ladies and three of them are with him in Venice, including his wife. Hight Noon approaches. Nine is one of those musicals where you don't particularly remember the music but the procution itself. The Nomad's production was completely memorable with, in particular, splendid costumes (black and white, a touch of red), a highly sophisticated set and some really fine lighting work. Steve Williams' direction was truly 'West End' with wonderful flowing movement, almost tableaux-like staging and seamless changes of time and place. The show was splendid and everyone involved must have worked immensely hard. The opening number was spell-binding and set the show up beautifully.

Contini is a professional little boy lost. Formed from an amalgam of Mama, the Catholic Church and early sex, he has blazed a trail in the movie industry as Renaissance man, director, scriptwriter, and actor. Everyone loves him, particularly he, himself, but in middle age he is in crisis. Stuart Freeman's anxious, raffish appearance was well in character and he anchored the mainly female cast with assurance, creating feelings of dislike and annoyance tinged with some envy (from the male viewpoint).

His nemesis, Maurice la Fleur, his producer, was played with great relish by Chris Bissex. La Fleur has never forgotten he once owned the Folies Bergeres and for some unknown reason has engaged Contini to direct a musical full of 'Les Girls'. Contini has chosen to forget this and La Fleur is here in Venice for this dues. He threatens Contini that he may well lose his parts and he does not mean theatrical ones.

Amber Chandler and Jenny Freeman as the 'other' woman moved disturbingly in and out of Contini's last few days. They loved him, he loved them, and he loved his wife who loved him too so why could not his simply be the way of things? Why not indeed? Antonia de Roche, as Luisa, who has given up her own successful life to support Contini, gave a fine performace as a woman who has kept her dignity intact despire Contini's incessant infidelity. Finally, however, she leaves him and her singing of 'Be On Your Own' was a highlight of the show. The film folds, Contini dies conveniently insured and the dream ends as in a 'better place' he is re-united with his wife.

Bravissimo Nomads!
