Creating Grimms Tales
Each year up to now the whole Play in a Week group has met at the theatre and spent a day brain-storming ideas for the show. As the group has now grown considerably, this year the production team decided that it would be more productive and practical to agree on a play before work on the show was started. Many ideas were suggested and after several discussions and talks with a number of the actors it was decided to create a show round some of the classic tales by the Brothers Grimm. Scripts were drafted and redrafted after a day long workshop in the ballroom at the Grange Centre, and even amended by the group this week at rehearsals.
With our director's hugely enthusiastic leadership it has been a week full of hardwork, but great fun with a lot of laughs. The theatre has been buzzing from early morning to late at night; not only with actors rehearsing words, music and dance but scenery being built, costumes being created, props made, lights rigged and sound recorded, and all this in five days!
So many of the folktales collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm at the beginning of the 17th century provide all the ingredients for great drama - macabre and yet humorous, quaint and yet powerful - and all very adaptable for the stage in so many different ways. We hope you will find our evening of story telling as much fun as we have had creating it for you.
