Billy - and me
When Penny Armitage spoke to me in June after a very harrowing performance of Shadowlands and asked me if I wanted to direct the Young Nomad musical you can guess my reaction! When she said it was Billy there was no contest.
As a wartime baby (1942) I am a contemporary of Billy and although born in the "soft" South it is easy to identify with dingy dancehalls, day-dreams and dishy girls.
It has always been my ambition to play the part of Billy, then as time went by I thought Dad, and I guess it's Duxbury now!
It's been really hard work for all the cast and technical crew, but it's been a real pleasure. To steal a line from Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall in this play, "I do adore Penny, but she's such a shit." |
