Official Review:
Stuff the review
Last mornin the Young Nomads offered up their latest treat with Stuff directed by Rowan Bangs. An aptly named title indeed for a selection of some fifteen or so scenes, all set in modern day and written by a variety of lesser known playwrights. The scenes all captured different aspects of modern day life, ranging from teen-age love to boring church sermons, from watching tearjerker films to collecting china cows!

Particular highlights for me included Bridget Titley and Francesca Trundle's scene. 'The Golden Door, an excellent piece of writing looking at an eastern European woman's attempt to enter the USA the land of the free. Francesca's excitement and exuberance contrasted delightfully with Bridget's portrayal of the mundane American, as the piece highlighted how advantaged Westerners take their freedom and wealth for granted. Zoe Triantafillou's 'Thoughts during a Boring Sermon' was delivered with perfect comic timing, as was Rowan Bangs energetic re-telling of little Red Riding Hood from the wolfs point of view! Kate Raye similarly handled 'My Mother collects China Cows' with panache. 'My Friend Never Said Goodbye' provided a very touching contrast to some of the more humorous pieces in the revue, and Acne Thomas and Nick Williams are to be congratulated for their delicate handling of it. Laurence Armitage provided very dry wit with his rather sorrowful tale of having his birthday on Christmas Day and Joe Alder handled a very difficult monologue 'Age of Consent' with a balance of humour, naiivety and aggression. Finally the Company sang 'Uncle Sam's Blues' to round off the entertainment, perhaps a little too political for the evening, yet performed with gusto by the ensemble.

Congratulations predominantly to Rowan Bangs for his direction of the evening. The staging, lighting (Nick Johnston) and sound (Robin Williams) was simple and yet very effective, and the transition between all the scenes was seamless, thus ensuring the flow of the piece as a whole. This was a thoroughly entertaining and engaging night out, and as an observer of this young local talent on their last night I have to add that it seemed such a shame that it was so miserably supported. These young people are the future of amateur theatre and deserve our admiration and support.
